Golden Tips for New Arab Students in Turkey
Golden tips for new Arab students in Turkey based on experiences of hundreds of Arab students who came before you.
First Days: 1) Open a bank account immediately at Ziraat Bank or Vakıfbank with your passport and acceptance letter. 2) Apply for student residence permit (Öğrenci İkamet İzni) within 30 days of arrival - bring rental contract, photos, passport copy, acceptance letter, financial proof. 3) Get a Turkish phone line (Turkcell/Vodafone) and register your phone within 60 days.
Daily Life: 4) Learn public transport via Google Maps/Moovit - get Istanbul Card or Ankara Card for discounts. 5) Shop at weekly bazaars (Pazar) and BIM/A101/Şok stores. 6) Eat at municipality restaurants (Halk Lokantası) - full meal for $2-4.
At University: 7) Join Arab student unions available in nearly every university. 8) Use all university services - library, labs, sports, counseling, career office. 9) Attendance is mandatory (70-80%). 10) Get health insurance (Allianz/AXA) as it is required for the residence permit.
