Renewing Student Residence in Turkey – Steps and Common Mistakes
Renewing the student residence permit is one of the most important annual procedures for foreign students.
When to Renew: Student residence is granted for one year, renewable. Apply at least 60 days before expiry.
Renewal Steps: 1) Book online appointment at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr. 2) Prepare documents: signed renewal form, valid passport + copies, 4 fresh white-background photos, university enrollment continuation letter, valid rental contract or university housing proof, year-round health insurance, bank statement, fee payment receipt. 3) Attend appointment with all originals and copies (15-30 mins). 4) Wait for card by PTT registered mail (1-3 months).
Common Mistakes: Late renewal (high daily fines), wrong photo specs (must be white background, no glasses), expired rental contract, missing certified translations, arriving without a pre-booked appointment.
If Residence Expires: Contact a Turkish immigration lawyer immediately. Regularization may be possible by paying a fine, depending on circumstances.
